Just because we’re staying home to stay safe doesn’t mean we’re benching our creativity! In fact, with Nando’s Hot Young Designer 2020 now open for entries, you could say we’re providing a benchmark for great local design. That’s right – this year we’re looking for the very best benches.
The current spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has left much of the world with no choice but to maintain social distance. This will eventually pass, however, it will leave its mark on society, and for the foreseeable future, even once we have flattened the curve and lifted lockdowns, it is likely that a level of social distancing will remain.
Every Nando’s Casa has a waiting bench for patrons to sit on while they wait for their take-away orders. What should this bench look like in the age of social distancing? How can it be easily adapted once the pandemic fully subsides and we can safely sit together once again.
Nandos’ is calling on all aspiring furniture designers to design a show-stopping bench, a reminder of the resilience of the African spirit, and a celebration of Southern Africa’s ever-evolving and eclectic design aesthetic.
Don’t miss this career-launching opportunity to propose the kinds of solutions to the world’s problems that we believe great design can, and to see your very own designs come alive.
Nando’s Hot Young Designer is a talent search initiative that opens a door for undiscovered young South African design talent to join our heartfelt celebration of local design. Entrants respond to a design brief and submit designs that are potentially included on the Nando’s Portal to Africa – our global Nando’s design procurement platform.
Our first two competitions focused on pendant light fittings and pattern designs. The designs submitted by winners and even finalists are used in Nando’s restaurants around the world.
We provide a brief and inspiration, choose and mentor finalists, select winners, and, where there is real fire, we offer enterprise development and mentorship opportunities to emerging young South African designers.
